I was having my weekly scan of the free from section in Tesco (what else is new) and I noticed some gluten free mini pastry cases. What a novelty! So obviously as with any new gluten free product, I had to try it out. These ready made pastry cases are Tesco own brand and you can find them HERE.

I noticed on the back of the packet, it had a recipe for savoury canapés with goats cheese and caramelised onion. A flavour combination is one of my all time favourites. So I went with the recommendation and put them to the test.

It was all very simple to do, all I needed was goats cheese, 1 red onion, butter and a teaspoon of brown sugar.

  1. Chop the onion into small chunks and caramelise in a pan with a few large knobs of butter and the brown sugar. Your onions will soften and shrink down. Do this on a low heat, it may take longer but you will avoid crisping the onions and the results are much better!
  2. Put a teaspoon of the onions into the pastry cases followed by a piece of goats cheese. Fill generously.
  3. Cook in the oven on 180C / Gas Mark 4 for 10 minutes.

Now obviously I can’t take credit for this recipe but with ready made canapé cases, you can very easily create whatever you like. Savoury or sweet. Smoked salmon and cream cheese, mozzarella and tomato, hummus and olive, mexican chilli, lemon tarts, chocolate and raspberry, pear and almond… anything goes. Oh and the one I want to try next, mini quiches. Delicious!

I found the pastry cases held well during handling, however they were quite dry and crumbly during eating – to be honest this is the case with most gluten free pastry! However, with the right fillings (I recommend something moist to counter-act any dryness) these are some very tasty canapés!! I also suggest filling these as full as possible, so you get a good pastry to filling ratio. I regretted shoving more in mine ha!

Whilst initially a little dry and crisp (even more so from being in the oven, so you can skip this step if need be), first impressions of these were very promising! They are going to be so perfect for us gluten avoiders to get creative with over Christmas, so thanks Tesco!

I think more than anything it is just great to see new innovative products hitting the shelves and see the free from isle continuously evolving. I don’t know about you guys but our Tesco free from section is HUGE now. Hooray!
